What's Love Got to Do With The Evolution of Consciousness?

Posted on Jul 9th, 2006 by Bryan : Servant of Openness Bryan

I realized some time ago that the greatest source of my own suffering was the suffering of other people.  As I inquired further, I realized that the source of the suffering seemed to be, time and again, lack of consciousness.  From environmental problems to corporate irresponsibility to animal and human rights abuses, they all seemed to be rooted in a lack of consciousness.

So the question naturally arose for me, "What facilitates the evolution of consciousness?" What makes people want to really grow and evolve their consciousness?  Where are the leverage points that will motivate people to push out of their comfort zone?

Money and sex, I concluded, are two primary driving forces motivating humans to grow beyond themselves. You could think of them as core elements of agency and communion, for you holon lovers out there.

In any case, I have chosen to focus on the communal side, sex/love/intimacy/relationship.  For those who are not in relationships, love, intimacy, companionship and sex are powerful motivators for growth, and can encourage people onto a path of self inquiry, self-discovery, and self-awareness.  Furthermore, once they are deriving satisfaction and fulfillment from healthy relationships, they're less likely to attempt to get these needs met through more destructive actions (materialism, consumerism, food/drug addictions).

In this way, I believe that putting attention on fostering authentic, fluorishing relationships is one of the most powerful ways to ensure the future of our health-- individually, collectively and as a planet.   That is why I am committed to fostering authentic, fluorishing relationships, and that is what my company, AuthenticSF, is committed to as well.   I welcome your contact, comments, feedback, collaboration opportunities, etc..
